Watch this trailer for a new mini docuseries, REAL FRUITVALE, which showcases the resilience and ingenuity of artists and changemakers from the Fruitvale neighborhood in Oakland, California. The series will be released between October 15th and November 2nd.
The REAL FRUITVALE is a true Oakland story. This neighborhood has weathered many hardships and tragedies over the decades. Yet it’s also a place of innovation, collaboration, and creative problem solving. Most recently, the Fruitvale accounts for the highest rates of COVID-19 infection in Alameda County.
This series highlights five Black and Latinx pillars in the Fruitvale who are thriving, despite incredible odds and who are transforming their community. Featured stories include small business owner and founder of @redbaycoffee @keba88; Fruitvale born and raised graffiti artist @amendtdk; Health advocate and CEO of La Clínica Jane Garcia; Chicano Movement activist and artists Annette Oropeza; and Fruitvale born and raised @favianna1, world-renown artist who uses her art to promote social change.
Real Fruitvale was conceptualized by featured artist and activist @favianna1 in collaboration with @the_unity_council and Respire Creative. The REAL FRUITVALE project aims to amplify untold stories about one of the most diverse and fascinating communities in Oakland.
